Lie Chaboun oversees a project in which the DCMR Environmental Protection Agency, responsible for the Rijnmond industrial zone, introduced the Envirometer at 80 industries. This is what she has to say about it:

DCMR made a conscoious choice to use the Envirometer. In my view, other such tools all have their limitations - by being restricted to just a single sector, for example. The Envirometer is suitable for most companies in the SME category and so we get a good, broad picture of the environmental burden in the region we serve.

It's a practical tool that industries support. At first [the companies] asked themselves: Why must we now take action and what's in it for us? When we paid them a visit, their attitude changed. The recommendations often lead to cost savings and that's something entrepreneurs are interested in! 

At the end of the day the alderman with environment in his portfolio gets a better idea of what we've done with his funds and how the environment has benefited.

Users

The Envirometer is designed for entrepreneurs and managers who are keen to cut their environmental costs and have a visual record of their environmental performance. Hundreds of Envirometers are being used in the Netherlands (where they are known as 'Milieubarometers') by companies and organisations from a broad range of sectors.

Organisation size 

The Envirometer is of greatest appeal is to production companies with more than 5 staff or offices with over 20 staff, although the tool may also be very useful for certain smaller organisations.

Sectors

The Envirometer is suitable for industry, commercial services, care institutions and government agencies. The current version is tailormade for the following sectors:

Companies and organisations working in other sectors can select the waste streams relevant to their particular activities.

The Envirometer is not suitable for chemical industries, which often have very specific stack emissions . Neither is the Envirometer suitable for industries whose main priorities relate to noise, stench and other types of nuisance.
