The Envirometer of Spijkstaal Elektro
Cost savings of up to 30,000 Euros a year
Spijkstaal Elektro has been using the Envirometer since 1999. The company manufactures battery-driven vehicles for short-distance (horizontal) transport of goods and passengers. In 2000 the company moved to new premises. The Envirometer bar chart reflects the difference in the environmental performance of the old and new premises. Good insulation and more efficient space heating in the various working areas reduced gas consumption by over 60%.
In the new premises, improved waste separation and recycling also led to environmental gains. In 2004 energy consumption once again became the key area of focus. After several years with a declining trend, the company's overall Envirometer score rose slightly in 2005 and 2006. Two clear causes can be identified:
- there was no procurement of green electricity (in 2003 and 2004 this was 25,000 kWh);
- extension of the services side of the business and more use of outside service mechanics meant substantially more additional transport activity.
In 2007 and 2008 new efficiency measures were implemented and in 2008 Spijkstaal switched to 100% green electricity.
One of the main contributors to Spijkstaal's environmental costs is energy consumption (gas and electricity). Thanks to the more energy-efficient new premises and additional energy-saving measures, the company's annual energy costs were cut by over ten thousand Euros. The additional focus on waste separation also led to considerable cost savings. In the past two years the costs have started to rise again. This is due mainly to the rise in energy prices and the additional mileage involved in the company's service activities. The second bar in the chart shows the costs if today's energy and waste prices had applied in 1999, reflecting the cost savings that have actually been achieved over the last 10 years.
