Envirometer for garages
The figure below shows the Envirometer for an average garage. It is based on the Envirometers of seven garages and vehicle repair shops.
As can be seen, the most important environmental themes for companies working in this sector are:
- emissions
- commercial waste
- hazardous waste
- Fuels
After these four are followed by electricity, business travel and water.
Indicator scores
From this average Envirometer we have calculated several indicator scores, reported below.
| Indicator score for garages/vehicle repairers, 2002 (n=7) | |||||
| Environmental theme | Indicator | Unit | Average | Best | Worst |
| Electricity | electricity / floor space | kWh/m2 | 62.5 | 50.3 | 99.1 |
| Fuel | gas / building volume | m3 gas-eq./m3 | 5.8 | 2.3 | 13.4 |
| Water | water / employee | m3/FTE | 18.9 | 14.5 | 156 |
Notes on Envirometer and indicator scores
- The companies ranged in size from 5 to 20 employees.
- 'Business travel' was not filled in by all companies, so the figure reported is an underestimate.
- There is major variation in water consumption from firm to firm, depending mainly on whether or not vehicles are washed.
- The companies are a mix of garages and vehicle repair shops. For the latter, emissions and gas consumption are key items. For garages (with showrooms) these will generally feature less prominently in the Envirometer.
