Envirometer for crèches

In a project carried out by Rotterdam municipal authority, crèches were benchmarked using the Envirometer, with a a total of fourteen creches providing their Envirometer data over 2001. These data were used to compute an average Envirometer and scores on the individual indicators. The results of this benchmarking exercise are reported below.

Envirometer

On the right, the average Envirometer of the 15 crèches responding. In this case 'fuel' refers to gas or district heating. For the average crèche, the shares of the environmental themes are as follows:

  • 24% electricity
  • 32% heating
  • 44% commercial waste
  • 1% water and sewage

Transport (commuting and business travel) have not been included, because these data were filled in by only a few of the respondents.

Indicator scores

The table below shows the indicator scores that emerged from the benchmarking of crèches. We report the average and best results. All the scores are on an annual basis.

Indicator scores for crèches, 2001 (n=14)
Environmerntal theme Indicator score Unit Average Best
Electricity electricity / floor space kWh/m2 58 32
  electricity / child capacity
kWh/child capacity 493 233

Heating gas / building volume m3 gas-eq./m3 7.6 3.0
  gas / child capacity m3 gas-eq./

Water water / child capacity m3/child capacity 12.5 6.6

Waste waste volume (total) / child capacity liter/child capacity 973 587
waste weight (total) / child capacity kg/child capacity 146 88
  fraction of waste separated % 6 46

Costs energy costs / child capacity €/child capacity 100 66
total environmental costs / child capacity €/child capacity 170 115

"Child capacity" was calculated as: (number of children*occupancy) + (capacity for after-school and/or similar non-school care*0.5).
