Envirometer for concrete suppliers
In a collaborative project by SenterNovem, one of the Netherlands' provincial authorities and Stimular, the Envirometer scores of ready-mixed concrete suppliers were compared, with six companies providing their results and the underlying data for the year 2004. These were used to calculate average Envirometer and indicator scores, which are reported below.
Key data on respondents
The production capacity of the concrete suppliers ranges from approx. 13,000 to 74,000 m3 concrete per annum.
Envirometer
The respondents' average Enviro
meter results are shown in the pie chart below. (12)
Per tonne output of ready-mixed concrete, staff commuting clearly has the greatest environmental impact, accounting for around 73% of the total score. Electricity, commercial waste and mobile machinery also feature relatively prominently in the Envirometer.
Indicator scores
The following table shows the indicator scores that emerged from the benchmarking of ready-mixed concrete companies. The table shows the average and the best score (where feasible). All the scores are on an annual basis.
| Indicator scores for concrete suppliers, 2004 (n=6) | ||||
| Environmental theme | Indicator | Unit | Average | Best |
| Raw materials(concrete mix) | coarse aggregate (gravel, granulate, limestone) / m3 concrete | tonne/m3 | 0.92 | |
| fine aggregate (sand) / m3 concrete | tonne/m3 | 0.86 | ||
| cement / m3 concrete | tonne/m3 | 0.31 | ||
| total raw materials / m3 concrete | tonne/m3 | 2.35 | ||
| Energy | building-related energy consumption (= electricity + gas + domestic fuel oil + propane) / m3 concrete | GJ/m3 | 0.029 | 0.018 |
| Water | water / m3 concrete | litre/m3 | 183 | 157 |
| Waste | rubble / m3 concrete | kg/m3 | 42 | 22 |
| Transport | diesel / m3 concrete | litre/m3 | 2.45 | 1.64 |
