Checklist for correct completion of the Envirometer

Having filled out your Envirometer, you may be wondering whether you've done so correctly. With the following checklist you should be able to rectify the most common errors. This check is intended to detect data errors and so gives no indication of whether you have scored better or worse than allied organiations.

This check is particularly useful if you're filling in the Envirometer for the first time. In the years ahead you can track down any differences with the previous year and seek an explanation. If no logical explanation can be found, you should recheck your input data .

Instructions for use: Answer all the questions. If your answer to any question is 'No', there may be a problem with your input data. For each 'No' we therefore advise you to check the relevant input data.

This checklist is divided into three sections:

Input screen
Floor space and building volume Is the building volume 3 to 5 times the floor area?
Staff and turnover Is the turnover 50,000 - 100,000 times the number of employees? (for the services sector)
Production and trading companies will have a higher turnover per employee.
Electricity and costs Is your electricity bill (in €) around 10% of consumption (in kWh)?
(the price of 1 kWh, incl. energy surcharge/ecotax and distribution costs, is about €0.20)
Gas and costs Is your gas bill (in €) around 25% of consumption (in m3)?
(the price of gas, incl. energy surcharge/ecotax and distribution costs, is around €0.50 per m3)
Green electricity Is the amount of green electricity less than or equal to total power consumption?
(Waste)water costs Does wastewater cost you about as much as water procurement?
Wastewater Is the number of pollution units ('population equivalents') around 2.5% of your water consumption (in m3)?
One possible explanation for a different ratio is that your wastewater is dirtier or cleaner than domestic wastewater. Is this the case?
(1,000 m3 domestic wastewater = 23 p.e. (population equivalents))
Emissions If you're a garage, printshop or home decorators, have you filled in solvent emissions?
Commercial waste
Have you filled in the right amount of kilos for your commercial waste?
(One refuse bag a week amounts to at least 300 kg waste a year.)
(One 1,100 litre container full of residual waste each week is about 8,500 kg a year.)
Waste streams Have you filled in all the various waste streams you generate? The following are sometimes forgotten: fluorescent lighting fittings, pallets, metals and waste paper/cardboard donated to local clubs.
Business travel Is the number of company car kilometres about 15,000 times the number of company cars?
Transport For each vehicle, have you filled in only kilometres or litres of fuel (not both)?

Envirometer charts
Chart Is the chart displayed and has the reference year been set to 100?
If not, consult the progam's Help pages (via the question mark icon) to remedy it.
Electricity Is electricity displayed (orange)? Unless you use 100% green electricity, this should be displayed on the chart .
Fuel Is fuel (yellow) displayed?
Commercial waste
Is commercial waste (dark blue) displayed?
Hazardous waste Is there less hazardous waste (light blue) than commercial waste?
Office paper Does office paper (red) account for no more than 10% of your Envirometer score?

Efficiency indicators
Electricity Is your indicator score between about 20 and 200 kWh/m2?
Gas(-equivalent) Is your indicator score between about 1 and 10 m3 gas/m3 building?

Commercial waste

Is your waste separation percentage about the same as you anticipated?
Waste Is the volume of waste between about 75 and 300 kg/employee? If not, does your company generate large volumes of production/demolition waste?
